The first Columbus location — and first Ohio location — of Los Angeles-based Sweetgreen opened last week in the Short North. The chain started in 2007 and now includes more than 230 locations nationwide. It’s known for its menu of seasonal salads, protein plates, hot bowls and sides.
Sweetgreen is transforming the corner space at 700 N. High St., on the southeast corner of High Street and East Lincoln Street. We remember when it was RJ Snapper’s, but over the years it’s been Level and Monarch saloons. The structure was completely gutted and open with floor to ceiling windows.
Sweetgreen’s menu is plant-centric, but not just plant-based—you’ll find salmon, chicken, and steak on offer. You can customize your own bowl, plate or salad or choose from 17-18 preset dishes. There is also a children’s menu.
We tried two of their ready meals and enjoyed both!
It was first chicken pesto parm bowl, with roasted chicken, spicy broccoli, tomatoes, grated parmesan, za’atar breadcrumbs, herbed quinoa, baby spinach, Sweetgreen’s hot sauce and pesto vinaigrette.
And that’s it miso glazed salmon plate: salmon is layered with avocado, cucumbers, pickled onions, crispy onions, white rice, nori sesame seasoning and spicy cashew sauce.
With both dishes, we enjoyed the combination of textures and flavors. The ingredients were fresh and the portions filling.
The prep kitchen is also surrounded by glass so you can watch the culinary team at work.
Although the space is substantial, seating filled up quickly (even though it was opening week), but there also seemed to be a steady carry-out business.
We really enjoyed our meal though and can see ourselves returning for many more visits!
