While on our spring trip to Amsterdam, we stopped for lunch at De Carrousel Pannenkoeken, a pancake house built out of an old carousel! Located in a park just a few blocks east of the Rijksmuseum.
The interior is indeed an old carousel, with detailed decor, light bulbs running along each edge, and some of the old horses located in the center.
The place tends to be hopping, so a door host will help you find a free table.
Like Upstairs Pancakes and many other pancake houses in Amsterdam, De Carrousel offers typical Dutch pancakes – thinner than pancakes and covering the whole plate. We tried versions with banana and Nutella.
Plus apple and cinnamon. They offer more than a dozen different flavor combinations.
And one of the other features is the Dutch treatment of poffertjes. They are small balls for pancakes, made in a special pan, sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Like the crepes, there are more than a dozen different toppings to choose from, such as fresh fruit, Nutella and whipped cream.
De Carrousel also serves waffles, breakfast (including English breakfast!), sandwiches, burgers and has a full coffee bar, beer, wine and spirits.
De Carrousel is a fun stop for breakfast or lunch on a day of exploring nearby museums, parks and other Amsterdam attractions!
The Pancake House is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
