Last week we had dinner with friends at Calero’s Bar & Grill, a newer Salvadoran restaurant in Northland. After we made plans to go, I learned that Calero’s was listed as one of them Columbus MonthlyThe best new restaurants of the year (even though I wrote the feature, I didn’t know the full list, ha!). And after even one visit, I think it’s safe to say that Calero has definitely earned its place.

The space is large and brightly lit with a full bar, a swing for kids in the corner (there’s a kids’ menu too), and if you stay long enough on certain nights, you’ll enjoy karaoke.
We met the owner Tania Alvarado who was also our server. She is super friendly and welcoming and offered to walk us through the menu.

We ended up choosing a mix of small bites and a few entrees to share as a group and loved every bite we tried. Here’s what we tried!
First: tostones with cameron. These were some of my favorite bites. They are fried plantains topped with shrimp and avocado, served with pickled onions and homemade cilantro sauce.

These are pastelitos: fried cornmeal patties with chicken and cheese. Like little empanadas, Tanya said.

Uncle Guac: bites of crispy fried pork belly with guacamole for dipping.

The specialty of the house is pupusas, small cornmeal pastries filled with various ingredients. We recommend ordering a few different ones to try. We had options filled with cheese, pork, pumpkin, peppers. All delicious.

For our first appetizer Tanya recommended asada tipico. It’s a tender steak served with refried beans, plantains, excellent sausage (excellent), rice, cheese, avocado and salsa. I highly recommend this one.

And I can’t say no when breakfast is on the table! Desayuno ranchero includes a pair of eggs cooked to order, refried beans, plantains, cheese and ranchero sauce.

Served with homemade tortillas.

Calero’s also has a small children’s corner with a swing. There is also a small children’s menu!

Our experience – from the food to the service – was excellent and we can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu.
