There’s a hidden gem right in the middle of one of the most popular attractions in Lexington, Kentucky: Track Kitchen at Keeneland! The nondescript one-storey building is in the heart of the racecourse and opens early every day, serving a cheap breakfast.

Track Kitchen offers cafeteria-style dining; guests take a tray and silverware, then line up at the counter. There are menus posted on the wall behind the servers, and they include a collection of sandwiches; favorites like breakfast burritos, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy; and the special breakfast.
The special is scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, biscuits and gravy and home fries for $6.50 or $9.50 if you go for the country ham. And everything is also available a la carte!

Here’s the country ham breakfast special, which might be a little salty for starters.

This was my breakfast special with sausage and grits added to the potatoes. And a garnish of warm apples with spices. I love how the scrambled eggs are cooked flat on the grill and then layered.

The Track Kitchen does its biscuits and gravy justice. Nice soft biscuits and well flavored sauce.

I also liked the spiced apples. Lots of cinnamon and very comforting in the colder months.

The country ham was good, but again, very salty. At least to someone like me who didn’t grow up with it!

The dining room is decorated with photos of winning horses from decades past, as well as jockeys, owners and other notables in the business.
The Keeneland Track Kitchen is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. To find her, look for the front entrance of Keeneland and follow the signs!
