

You can call 2024 the year of coffee in Columbus! Between welcoming new stores, seeing beloved bakeries open their first storefronts, watching others expand or move to new homes, it’s been a delightfully busy year at Columbus Coffee. This doesn’t cover everything, but here are 16 new coffee shops opening in Columbus in 2024!


Moonbird Coffee debuts in early 2024. with a charming soft green trailer in Grandview, nestled in a parking lot behind The View on Fifth. The owners Candice and Eric O’Neill are wonderfully hospitable and their coffee is top notch. I love stopping in for an espresso, their Mystic Rhythm latte, or one of their seasonal creations.

After years of operating as a mobile coffee cart, Two Tigers Coffee has opened perhaps the smallest coffee shop in town. It occupies a narrow window in Clintonville, but it’s proof that size doesn’t matter. Tony uses a mix of stoves to brew hand-pulled espresso, drip coffee, tea, matcha and more.

After an award-winning roastery, Royal Flamingo debuted its own cafe at I Like It Like That cocktail bar, itself inside Natalie’s in Grandview. The cozy and eclectic shop is a showcase for Bryan’s dynamic coffee range, from expert blends to award-winning, uniquely roasted coffee. I personally love the barista breakfast, espresso tasting board, white and batch brew.

Qahwah House is the latest shop in a stream of Yemeni coffee shops in central Ohio, such as Finjin Cafe or Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. Like many of the stores, Qahwah House is based in eastern Michigan. Their beautiful downtown space features a full line of traditional Yemeni beverages (using rural Yemeni coffees, of course), as well as traditional Italian espresso drinks, snacks, and more. If you like the place, you’re in luck: they’re already planning another location in town.

Kokomo is a small outpost on the growing Parsons Avenue stretch that offers a variety of coffees, teas, juices and snacks. The one-room shop features indoor seating and lovely patios for relaxing with a Maria’s Cafecito or a creamy nitro cold brew.

In recent years, Black Kahawa has gone from roastery to trailer, and this year they finally settled into a home at Broad and High downtown. Owner Doug Buckley focuses on importing and roasting East African coffee and showcases them in local shops and on the streets. His space breathes new life into the old Tim Horton’s and is a nice place, great for relaxing with their nitro cold brew flavored with Zanzibar’s blend of spices.

It’s been a year of homecomings, I’d say! Like several other roasters in the city, Jennings Java finally debuted its own cafe in 2024. Owners Daniel and AJ have been baking for years, going from takeout to selling bottled coffees in the back of the space and now finally a full-service shop in the original Bake Me Happy space in Merion Village. Bonus: you can also enjoy their coffee at Nocterra Brewing’s new Audubon restaurant.

Honey Cup Coffee Co. also moved into their own space this year, after several years of traveling from trailer to shop at Rambling House. Come back to their shop for spinning records, vintage decor, fun community events and of course – great coffee.

Although Mission is certainly not a new bakery – and this store isn’t even new to them! – was still big news when they returned to the Short North. The Price Avenue space was their original store and bakery before undergoing multiple moves and ownership changes. They still bake and serve on the South Side, but in 2024. managed to return to their roots.

Casa Cacao might get the award for Columbus’ most unique new coffee shop. It makes its home in a long-vacant space on Hudson Street and features eclectic decor like stone-inlaid tables and arrowheads. Its triple menu focuses on drinks made with coffee, cocoa (real cocoa – don’t think sweetened hot chocolate here) and the kava plant.

Kape Coffee is an Asian-inspired coffee pop-up that took up residence in Wolf’s Ridge Brewing’s outfit this year. The team serves up an expertly crafted menu of toppings, lattes, espresso, matcha plus seasonal creations you won’t find anywhere else.

Crimson is a specialty brand under Crimson Cup Coffee that features a more modern design and third-wave specialty coffee menu. They started in Easton a few years ago, but eventually expanded to a store in Newman Center near Ohio State.

The Purple Door is a small shop on the ground floor of Zora’s House, a co-working and community space for women of color. Zora’s House just opened its new Weinland Park building, and the community cafe (offering local snacks like Bake Me Happy and Three Bites Bakery) offers a nice finish.

Standardized Brewing opened this year in Lewis Center’s Evans Farm complex, ideally located near the front of the neighborhood, and wisely opened early as a full-service donut and sandwich cafe, then evolved into a brewery that hosts food trucks .

Like Qahwah House, Qamaria is a Michigan-based Yemeni coffee chain making its way into central Ohio. This year they added a second store in a spacious storefront in the Lewis Center, just north of Polaris Parkway.

Piqua, Ohio-based Winans is no stranger to Columbus, but this year they opened their most central store yet in the Short North. The space features a full coffee bar plus a retail store selling all their chocolates, coffees, snacks and other goodies.
